Post-Pancreas Transplant Care

The extraordinary care you receive throughout the transplant journey does not end when you leave the hospital. Our kidney/pancreas team remains available for you, your family and your primary physicians, nephrologists and/or endocrinologists to answer questions after transplant.

Going Home

After a kidney/pancreas or pancreas alone transplant, your life will be much different than life on dialysis and with insulin. Activities will not be restricted and the medications will be very different. The diet will be easier to plan, although there may need to be limitations on the amount of salt and calories allowed. If you have questions or concerns about your diet, a dietician is available for assistance with nutritional planning.

You will need to have your blood and urine tested on a regular basis after transplant. Most patients will need to have their labs checked at least three times a week at first and more often if necessary. In most cases, the lab work can be done at a hospital laboratory close to your home. The transplant surgeon will gradually lower the number of lab draws needed each week over the first year until you are getting labs once a month. The anti-rejection medication dosage will be adjusted up or down depending on the results of your lab work.

YOU play a very important part in making your transplant a success. There are four basic patient responsibilities after transplant.

  1. Take your medications as instructed
  2. Have lab work done as scheduled
  3. Call the transplant coordinator or doctor if there are any symptoms of rejection, infection or any other problem
  4. Keep regular appointments with your doctor and transplant team
