Advances in technology have led to a dramatic increase in the ability to treat a variety of conditions using minimally invasive procedures providing patients with quicker recovery times, less pain and fewer complications. The Nebraska Medical Center is pioneering new and innovative minimally invasive surgical procedures that are making surgery less demanding and more comfortable to the patient.
Surgery can now be performed using small incisions that can be closed with only a few stitches. Using specialized techniques such as miniature cameras with microscopes, tiny fiber optic lights and high definition monitors, surgeons can correct many problems without requiring the patient to undergo major surgery or large incisions. Minimally invasive surgery is performed both on an inpatient (stay in the hospital) and outpatient (go home the same day) basis.
Minimally invasive surgery offers patients many benefits including:
- small incisions
- less preoperative time
- shorter hospital stays
- quicker return to normal activity
- elimination of potential complications
- reduced risk of herniation or wound separation

Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric Surgery is a weight-loss surgery for patients who are 100 pounds overweight. Patients who have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40, may also be candidates for bariatric surgery.
Acid Reflux Surgery
Acid Reflux Surgery is a common treatment for GERD, the frequent reflux of gas and liquid into the esophagus. Patients who do not respond well to lifestyle changes or medications or those who continually require medications to control their symptoms, will have to live with their condition or may undergo a surgical procedure. Surgery is very effective in treating GERD.
Robotic Surgery
The Nebraska Medical Center is one of the nation’s leaders in the use of robotic surgery and was one of the first sites in the country to acquire the technically advanced robotic da Vinci™ Surgical System in 2000. This sophisticated technology provides surgeons with intuitive control, range of motion and incredible precision and accuracy, while minimizing the impact on the body.
