Could You Have Diabetes?
There are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the
population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been
diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third)
are unaware that they have the disease. Diabetes is a silent disease. You could
have it for years and never know it. During this time damage from too much sugar
in your blood could cause damage to your eyes, nerves, and kidneys. Take the
test to see if you are at risk for having diabetes.
Who Is at Risk for Diabetes?
Your risk for diabetes increases as you get older, gain too much weight, or if
you do not stay active. Diabetes is much more common in African Americans,
Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
Risk Factors for Diabetes
- Having high blood pressure (at or above 130/80)
- Having a family history of diabetes
- Having diabetes during pregnancy or having a baby weighing more than nine pounds
at birth.
Don't Wait For Signs
Diabetes often goes undiagnosed because many of its symptoms seem so harmless.
Recent studies indicate that the early detection of diabetes symptoms and
treatment can decrease the chance of developing the complications of diabetes.
Some diabetes symptoms include:
- Frequent urination
- Excessive thirst
- Extreme hunger
- Unusual weight loss
- Increased fatigue
- Irritability
- Blurry vision
